At the Institute of Applied Physics, in the new research unit for Physics of Three-dimensional Nanomaterials, TU Wien offers a position as University Assistant (Post-Doc) with 40 hours/week, limited to 6 years. Expected start date: October 2023 or shortly after.

The program:

Our group is carrying out pioneering work on three-dimensional nanomagnetism, where we study new physical phenomena in 3D magnetic nanomaterials, going beyond the standard approaches based on planar geometries. Moving to 3D has a great potential to create ultra-high density low-power devices and to exploit new physical effects which emerge as a consequence of the change in dimensionality.

In this program, the candidate will carry out experimental work devoted to the design, fabrication and characterization of three-dimensional nanomagnetic systems.

  • Participation in and management of research projects
  • Participation in teaching activities: Labs, tutorials, co-supervision of Bachelor's, Master's and PhD students
  • Support in grant acquisition
  • Participation in organizational and administrative tasks of the Research Unit and the Institute

Your profile:
This research program provides a unique intersection of various areas in spintronics, including thin film deposition, magneto-optical and magneto-electrical characterisation, and magnetic modelling. For this ambitious objective, we are looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher fulfilling these requirements:

  • Doctoral degree in Physics or related field
  • Excellent knowledge in the field of experimental physics focused on magnetic thin film heterostructures for spintronic applications. This may include physics of synthetic antiferromagnets, ultra-thin film materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, chiral spin interactions, spin textures (domain walls, skyrmions)
  • Proficiency in sputtering of complex magnetic multilayered heterostructures
  • Experience in evaporation of magnetic thin films would be an asset
  • Experience in some of these areas: micro/nano fabrication, magneto-electrical, magneto-optical measurements, XMCD-based synchrotron techniques, micromagnetic simulations
  • Scientific skills are to be supported primarily with a relevant list of publications in the field
  • Willingness to participate in teaching (also in German, after a settling-in period) as well as project acquisition and management is expected
  • Excellent command of the English language and very good communicative skills and team competences

Entry level salary is determined by the pay grade B1 of the Austrian collective agreement for university staff. This is a minimum of currently EUR 4,351.90/month gross, 14 times/year for 40 hours/week. Relevant working experiences may increase the monthly income.
