  • Die Beiträge des HEPHY zum Bau und zum Betrieb des CMS-Experiments werden direkt vom Bundesministerium für Wissenschaft und Forschung gefördert.
Research Topics:
Current research topics:
  • Electronics Systems
    a) Development, design and construction of the Pixel Readout system for 66 million channels, consisting of 40 Front-End Driver modules ("Pixel-FED" in VME standard). Each module receives data through 36 analogue optical links for digitization, sorting and checking, before passing them on to the Data Acquisition system. Specially modified "Pixel-FED" units have been developed to read out Beam Conditions Monitor and Pixel Luminosity Telescope for beam monitoring.
    b) Development, design and construction of more than 13 000 Analogue Opto-Hybrid boards, located in the Tracker front-end. Electrical to optical signal conversion for 8 million strip detector and for the 66 million pixel channels and subsequent transfer to Front-End Driver modules.
  • Silicon Strip Tracker
    a) Development of silicon sensors, test structures and qualification procedures for the sensors produced in industry. Electrical characterization of 2400 silicon sensors and 1400 test structures with self-developed probe stations developed in the HEPHY cleanroom. Contributed to the design of the relational database to store the measurement results (>2 million entries). Long-term and process stability measurements, thermal cycling for ageing studies.
    b) HEPHY assembled 700 modules (silicon sensor, carbon fibre frame, readout electronics) with accuracy better than 10 µm; wire bonding of approximately one million electrical connections and metrology with 3D coordinate measuring machine; functionality tests and ageing studies. Repair centre for 400 modules. Coordination of the production of 7000 modules for the tracker end-caps: logistics, assembly and testing involving 15 institutes in Europe and the US.
    c) Significant contributions to the integration of the tracker end-caps into the tracker, to tests and to integration of the Silicon Strip Tracker in the CMS detector.
  • Software Algorithms
    a) Development of novel algorithms for recognition and reconstruction of tracks, and of interaction and decay vertices; implementation into the reconstruction software framework of CMS.
    b) Development of the novel Kalman Alignment Algorithm to align all modules of the CMS tracker to 10 micron precision. This algorithm is one of three algorithms used by CMS.
  • Tracker Commissioning, Operations and Maintenance
    HEPHY contributed significantly to the tracker power supply system (installation, commissioning, monitoring); contribution to tracker operation and to measurements of critical parameters (evolving with irradiation); maintenance of tracker items under HEPHY responsibility (hardware and software); tracker shift participation and experts on call.
Future topics (next 5 years):
  • CMS Tracker Upgrade
    a) Adaptation of the Pixel-FED for the planned upgrade of the CMS pixel detector (4 barrel layers).
    b) Involved in R&D project investigating radiation hard material for CMS Tracker upgrade: design of sensors done in-house; neutron irradiations at Vienna research reactor ("Atominstitut" of Vienna Univ. of Technology); studies of special silicon modules providing information to "level 1" trigger (staggered silicon sensors). Joint development project for novel radiation-tolerant detectors together with market-leading Austrian semiconductor industry.
    c) Further development of our software algorithms for planned luminosity upgrade (increased number of overlapping vertices); studies of new algorithms.
