Current research topics:
  • Belle Physics Analysis:
    Leadership of the Belle CKM group (top-level physics analysis group), semileptonic and leptonic B decays, determination of the Cabibbo- Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements |Vcb| and |Vub|, search for the charged Higgs particle in tauonic and semitauonic B decays, leptonic and semileptonic decays of charmed mesons.
  • Belle Silicon Vertex Detector Electronics:
    Design and construction of the FADCTF electronics readout boards (Fast Analogue-to-Digital Converter with Trigger Facilities), handling the data of 110 592 strip detector channels. Apart from data digitization and collection, these boards also provide a (coarse) track trigger; 36 VME modules installed; flawless operation 2003-2010.
Future topics (next 5 years):
  • Belle II Silicon Vertex Detector :
    Double sided sensors (on 6" silicon wafers) for the Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD) of Belle II will be fully designed and developed at HEPHY. This involves layout, parameter specification and electrical characterization of 250 sensors, including functionality and irradiation tests. Design and construction of chip-on-sensor readout modules using a novel low-mass connectivity scheme with both electrical and mechanical design done in-house. Development of the ultra-light support structure and the cooling system with CO2 as a baseline. HEPHY has accepted the core responsibility for the new SVD including electronics (see below); one HEPHY staff member is co-leader of the international SVD collaboration.
  • Belle II Silicon Vertex Detector Electronics:
    R&D, design and (future) construction of the full readout chain between the front-end modules and the back-end Data Acquisition (DAQ) system. Based on the experience gained at Belle I and CMS, this will be an entirely new system consisting of 243 456 channels, capable of operating at a 50 times higher trigger rate. Massive parallel online data processing in FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) firmware will be used to achieve the necessary throughput and to reduce the data volume by a factor of approximately 60 already before being sent to the DAQ.
  • Belle II Physics Analysis:
    For the first phase of Belle II physics analysis with an integrated luminosity of about 5 ab^(-1), we have identified a tentative list of channels that allow to explore physics beyond the Standard Model:
    B+ -> tau+ nu (search for the charged Higgs boson),
    B+ -> mu+ nu (charged Higgs, first observation of this mode), and
    B0 -> phi K0-short (search for new physics contributions in the penguin loop).
